Hartley Nature Center Viewshed Analysis for Master Plan

Hartley Nature Center collaborated with the Geospatial Analysis Center (GAC) to create viewshed analyses from both the Nature Center Building and Rock Knob in order to visually and statistically demonstrate the potential impacts of paved trails and new development in the park proposed in the Hartley Park and Woodland Recreation Area Master Plan.

Forested areas were digitized and assigned different heights for deciduous and coniferous tree patches. The study also calculated that the proposed paved trail would go through over 1 mile of fragile wetlands. A shorter, 1.3-mile trail was suggested as an alternative to the consultant-proposed 4.6-mile paved trail, with a hardened surface instead of paving. A hardened surface would allow for increased accessibility while maintaining the park's natural landscapes.
