Scholarships/Awards

Each year we recognize outstanding achievement by our undergraduate and graduate students. Many of these awards are made possible by generous monetary gifts by alumni, faculty and friends of the Department. The awards and recent recipients are listed below.

Outstanding Graduate Student Award recognizes a geology graduate degree candidate for the greatest overall contribution to the Geology Department, including scholarship. This award is given in memory of Ralph W. Marsden who was respected the world over as a scientist and person. He was head of the Geology Department from 1967 to 1974 and retired from UMD in 1980. It is also in memory of Randy Seeling who was a graduate student in Geology at UMD and completed his Master’s degree in 1977. He met an untimely death in May 1979, in an accident while touring Europe.

Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to graduate students who show exceptional aptitude or accomplishment as a Teaching Assistant.

Outstanding Senior Award, provided by the Ralph W. Marsden Fund and the Society of Mining, Metallurgy and Exploration (SME), is an award given to outstanding graduating seniors on the basis of scholarship.

Hugh Roberts Scholarship is an award given to an outstanding junior geology major, determined by scholarship. This award is given in memory of Hugh Roberts who was an internationally known consulting geologist from Duluth. 

SME Tools-of-the-Trade Award is given to outstanding sophomores to acquire geological field gear, based on scholarship.

Estwing Award is a rock hammer donated by the Estwing Co. for exceptional performance in Geologic Field Methods.

Robert C. Bright Field Camp Scholarship is given in memory of Robert C. Bright, who was a paleontologist in the Department of Ecology on the Twin Cities Campus. Professor Bright was instrumental in establishing the Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp in 1967 and was its first director, a position he retained until 1972.

Robert L. Heller Field Camp Scholarship is given in memory of Robert L. Heller, who founded the Geology Department and became Chancellor of UMD. Scholarships are awarded to UMD geology majors attending field camp, on the basis of scholarship and need.

Charlie Matsch Field Camp Fund, awarded to support field camp expenses for UMD students.

Lempi M. & John W. Pagnucco Scholarship, established by Lempi (Erickson) Pagnucco to support field camp expenses for UMD students.

“Rip” Rapp Field Camp Scholarship, awarded to support field camp expenses for UMD students.

Roderick Syck Field Camp Scholarship, established by his family in his memory, is awarded to UMD student(s) with the highest achievement at Wasatch-Uinta Field Camp each summer.


2007
Scholarships and Awards

Outstanding Graduate Student Award recipients are Nick Lang (PhD), Roger Bannister, Nick Freiburger, and Jon Van Alstine (MS). Award is based on greatest overall contribution to the Geology Department in calendar year 2006.

Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant Award is given to Valerie Gamble.

Outstanding Senior Award (Ralph W. Marsden Fund and the SME) recipients are Alyson Cartwright and Taylor Nordberg.

Hugh Roberts Scholarship (Outstanding Junior Award) recipient is Joseph Jacobs .

SME Tools-Of-The-Trade Award recipients are Hillary McGown and Eric Stifter, presented at the 2007 SME Minnesota Section Mining Symposium luncheon.

Differt Scholarship recipient is Joseph Jacobs.

Estwing Award is given to Eric Tharalson.

All students who went to field camp in 2007 received scholarships.

Additional Recognition

Melinda Huff received a Darland All-American Scholarship. Scholarship recipients were selected and approved by UMD Chancellor Kathryn Martin. Each recipient receives a scholarship for 2000-2001.

Zach Wenz received an Enbridge Scholarship. The recipients must be in their junior or senior year and are selected on academic achievement and undergraduate research.

The 2001 Summer Field Course Scholarship Program, supported by contributions from the American Association of State Geologists, NAGT, NAGT’s Rosalski Fund, and several major petroleum companies, awarded 30 scholarships to U.S. undergraduate students attending a summer geology field course. Melinda Huff was a recipient of this year’s award.

Two of our faculty members received the Chancellor’s Award for Distinguished Research. This honor is given each semester to recognize the research contributions of UMD faculty members and to provide opportunities to present developing research to a broad UMD audience. George “Rip” Rapp, Regents’ Professor of Geoarchaeology and Director of the Archaeometry Lab received this award in Fall 2000. Thomas C. Johnson, Professor of Geological Sciences and Director of the Large Lakes Observatory received this award in Spring 2001.

Richard W. Ojakangas received the CSE Sabra S. and Dennis L. Anderson Scholar/Teacher Award. This honor is given to a college faculty member of scholarly distinction and teaching excellence who has encouraged undergraduates to undertake meaningful research projects.

John B. Swenson was awarded the Student Association 2000-01 Outstanding Faculty Award.


2000

Additional Recognition

Christopher Anderson won a prize in the UMD Student Web Contest. The contest involved developing Web sites and/or Web-based materials for undergraduate courses. Howard Mooers was his faculty sponsor and the Web site is http://www.d.umn.edu/~hmooers.

John C. Green, emeritus professor, was awarded the Goldich Medal at the Institute on Lake Superior Geology annual meeting. The prestigious award is given annually to a geologist for outstanding contributions to the geology of the Lake Superior region. John has been doing geologic mapping and research on the Lake Superior area since 1962.

Keri Hager received a Darland All-American Scholarship. Scholarship recipients were selected and approved by UMD Chancellor Kathryn Martin. Each recipient receives a scholarship for 2000/2001.

Phil Larson, Ph.D. candidate, received through the Graduate School Fellowship Office a Stanwood Johnston Memorial Fellowship for 2000-2001. Two awards are given with a stipend for the academic year plus tuition. It is available to promising graduate students in biochemistry, chemistry, geology, geophysics, microbiology or physics.

Ron Morton’s book (with Carl Gawboy), "Talking Rocks", was named Best Book of 1999 by the Midwest Independent Publishers Association at the annual Midwest Book Achievement Awards as well as Best Environmental Book.

Zoe Treuer entered an essay contest sponsored by the Center for Character Development at the Air Force Academy. Zoe’s paper impressed the organizers so much that she was flown to Colorado to hear her essay, “Heroes, Hymns and Hardiness”, presented during the opening ceremony and again at the Student Consortium. Her paper was then published in the National Character and Leadership Symposium proceedings.
