University of Minnesota Duluth Study Abroad Scholarships

UMD offers $20,000 in scholarships annually to UMD students studying on programs abroad and the University of Minnesota system offers over $100,000 in scholarships to University of Minnesota students studying on UMD or University of Minnesota sponsored programs.

Eligible Students

The UMD study abroad scholarships are open to degree seeking students on the Duluth campus studying on an approved study abroad program. Students must be participating in a study abroad program requiring a passport.

Students enrolled at another campus should apply directly with their home campus study abroad office.

Application Process

Applicants will need to complete the online application form which includes a short essay that answers:
  1. Why you selected your study abroad program
  2. How you will prepare to maximize your learning while abroad, and
  3. What you plan on learning during your study abroad experience

Only electronic applications submitted by the deadline will be accepted. Applicants will receive an e-mail indicating their application has been received.

Scholarships

By submitting the UMD Study Abroad Scholarship application students will be applying for the following scholarships:

UMD Study Abroad Scholarship
Eligibility: Students must be enrolled as a UMD degree-seeking undergraduate going on an International Education Office approved study abroad program requiring a passport with a minimum of three credits and ten days in length.

UMN University-wide Scholarship
Eligibility:Students must be enrolled as a UMD degree-seeking undergraduate going on an International Education Office approved study abroad program requiring a passport with program a minimum of 3 credits AND 3 weeks in length.

UMD Affiliate Program Scholarships
Eligibility: UMD enrolled student participating on an affiliate program from Academic Programs International (API), Academic Studies Abroad (ASA), American Institute for Foreign Studies (AIFS), GlobalLinks (AustraLearn or AsiaLearn), International Studies Abroad (ISA) or University Study Abroad Consortium (USAC). Amounts for these scholarships vary from year to year. 

Optional scholarship opportunity
Applications will be considered for the Alworth Scholarship only if indicated on the application form.(see check box).

UMD Alworth Institute Study Abroad Scholarship
Eligibility: UMD enrolled student demonstrating an interest in acquiring international experience such as attending Alworth Institute events.  The successful applicant will be expected to offer an Alworth International Brown Bag presentation for the Alworth Institute.

Notification of Awards

All scholarship applicants are notified of the scholarship committee's decisions via an e-mail sent directly to to the applicant's U of MN e-mail account. Notification will be sent approximately six weeks after the application deadline.
