Changing your password
When you first receive your Novell account, you will be given a temporary password that expires in 7 days. After that, your Novell password will expire every 180 days. You will be notified at login beginning one week before the password expires. Select "Continue" to login and close the window. When all desktop programs have loaded, proceed to change your Novell password.
After the expiration date, you will have an additional 7 grace logins within which to change the password. If you do not change your password within the grace period, your account will be disabled. At this point, you will need to contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847) and a system administrator will work with you to reactivate your account.
Password requirements
When selecting a new Novell password, keep the following criteria in mind:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters (Mac users are limited to 8 characters).
- Must include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the Novell security template tracks your last 8 Novell passwords).
Changing your Novell password (Win2000/XP):
- Log in to Novell and the workstation.
- Press the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys. On the "Netware Security" window, select the Change Password... button.

On the "Change Password" window, you will see a list of "Resources" (accounts) you can update. In addition to the Novell account (tree icon/Novell name), you will see a Workstation account (computer icon/computer name). If you use Samba services, you may also see Samba accounts (computer icon/windir or computer icon/www).

- Select (highlight) the Novell resource only, as shown below. (By default, all resources/accounts are selected.)
- Type in your current Novell password.
- Type in your new Novell password.
- Retype the new Novell password (to confirm).
- Click OK to change your Novell password.

If the update was successful, you will get a message indicating this. Click OK to close the window.
Changing your Win2000/XP workstation password:
To simplify your login process, you will probably want to update your WinXP/2000 workstation password at the same time you update your Novell password. To do this:
- Press the CTRL-ALT-DEL keys to open the "Netware Security" window, and select the Change Password... button.
- Select (highlight) the Workstation resource only, as shown below.
- Type in your current Workstation password.
- Type in your new Workstation password. Workstation password criteria:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters.
- Must include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the workstation security template tracks your last 5 workstation passwords).
- Retype the new Workstation password (to confirm).
- Click OK to change your Workstation password.

If the update was successful, you will get a message indicating this. Click OK to close the window.
Changing your Novell password (Win98/ME):
- Log in to Novell.
- RIGHT-click on the red "N" in the lower-right task bar.
- From the pull-down menu, select User Administration - Novell Password Administration.

- Type in your current Novell password.
- Type in your new Novell password.
Changing your Novell password (Mac OSX):
- In the Novell (officefiles) login screen click on
the "Gear" icon and select "Change Password"
If you are using OSX 10.3 select "Change Password" from the Options menu. - Enter your current (or temporary) 8 character password and your new password (twice).
- Click OK. If your new password is accepted you'll be returned to the login window
- Enter your new password and connect to the "Files" volume
Note: the login username that OSX automatically fills in may not be your OSX account name. Change it to your email/X.400 username.
Macintosh password requirements:
- Must be 8 characters (no mor, no less).
- Should include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the Novell security template tracks your last 8 Novell passwords).
Password messages
Password expiration notice
When you login, you see the following message:

Solution: Select "Continue" to login and close the window. When all desktop programs have loaded, change your Novell password (see Changing your Novell password (WinXP/2000) or Changing your Novell password (Win98).
Grace expiration
When you login, you see the following message:

Solution: Select "Yes" to change it. The following window is shown:

Type in your new Novell password.
Retype the new Novell password (to confirm), then click OK to change the Novell password. Please note that this does NOT change your Workstation password; to change your Workstation password, see Changing your Win2000/XP Workstation password
If you select "No,", you can continue with the login process, then change it when all desktop programs have loaded (see Changing your Novell password (Win2000/XP) or Changing your Novell password (Win98/ME) ).
Grace logins expired
When you login, you see the following message and are denied access:

Solution: You did not change your password within the alloted grace period (7 days plus 7 logins). Contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847) and a system administrator will work with you to reactivate your account.
In the mean time, you can check the "Workstation only" box to bypass Novell and log in to your computer for access to the Internet and email (see Logging in as Workstation Only for details.

Incorrect password:
When you login, you see the following message and are denied access:

Solution: You may have typed in your Novell user name and/or password incorrectly. Try again, retyping your username and verifying that CAPS LOCK is not on. If the problem persists, contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847) and a system administrator can verify your account name and reset your password if needed.
Locked account:
For security reasons, Novell accounts are automatically locked after five attempts to log in with an incorrect password. You will receive the following error message when a 6th incorrect login is attempted:

Solution:Contact the ITSS Help Desk (x8847) and a system administrator will unlock the account for you.
Old Password entered was invalid:
This message can appear if you attempt to change both your Novell and Workstation password at the same time and they are not synchronized (do not match). The system will update your Novell password, but will not update the Workstation password, and you will see the following message:

Solution: Select Close, then update the Workstation account password:
- Select (highlight) the Workstation resource only, as shown below.
- Type in your current Workstation password.
- Type in your new Workstation password. Workstation password criteria:
- Must be a minimum of 8 characters.
- Must include at least one upper and one lower case letter, and at least two numbers and/or symbols.
- Must be unique (the workstation security template tracks your last 5 workstation passwords).
- Retype the new Workstation password (to confirm).
- Click OK to change your Workstation password.

If the update was successful, you will get a message indicating this. Click OK to close the window.
