Printing via IP with a Macintosh

Most Macintosh users are familiar with choosing a printer by selecting an AppleTalk zone in the Chooser (or PrintCenter in OSX) and then selecting a printer from the list of printers available in that AppleTalk zone. Doing this requires that the network connection your Macintosh is connected to has Appletalk networking available on it (in addition to the IP networking that's available on all network connections).

AppleTalk is available on most network connections at UMD. However, AppleTalk is not available on the UMD wireless network, on the authenticated network connections in the classrooms and public areas on campus, and in some buildings on campus such as the Library and Kirby Plaza.

You can still print to a network printer from a Macintosh even if AppleTalk is not available by creating an "IP" printer using the PrintCenter utility in OSX, or by creating an "LPR" printer using the Desktop Printer Utility in OS 8-9. These IP/LPR printers will also work when you're connected to a network connection that does have Appletalk.

Creating an IP Printer in OSX

  1. Open the PrintCenter application located in the Utilities folder of your Applications folder.

  2. Click on the Add button at the top of PrintCenter's Printer List window..

  3. Choose IP Printing from the pop-up menu at the top of the Add Printer window.

  4. Enter print.d.umn.edu for the Printers's Address. Remove the checkmark in front of Use default queue. and enter the name of your printer in the Queue Name: box. The name of your printer will probably be the same name as it appears when you're able to select it from within an AppleTalk zone. You can find a list of print queues available on the print.d.umn.edu server by clicking here.

  5. Selecting the printer model allows you to use more printer-specific features for that printer. Select the model of printer you're printing to from the Printer Model: list and then click the Add button.

  6. You should now see your printer listed in the PrintCenter list and be able to print to it via IP

Creating an LPR Desktop Printer in OS8-9

  1. Open the Apple Desktop Printer Utility located in the Apple LaserWriter Software folder of your Apple Utilities folder. If you do not have this utility your system may not be new enough to support LPR printing.

  2. Select the Printer (LPR) option and click OK

  3. Click on the Change button for thePrinter Description (PPD) file and select a Printer Description (PPD) file for the printer at the top of the next dialog box. This allows you to use more printer-specific features for the printer. You may have to install a PPD file for your printer (or use the "Generic" setting) if it is not in the list of installed PPDs.

  4. Click on the Change button for the LPR Printer Selection. For the Printer Address enter print.d.umn.edu. Enter the name of your printer in the Queue: box. The name of your printer will probably be the same name as it appears when you're able to select it from within an AppleTalk zone. You can find a list of print queues available on the print.d.umn.edu server by clicking here.

  5. Click OK and then click the Create button, name the new Desktop Printer, and save it
    to your Desktop.

  6. You should now see the new Desktop Printer on your Desktop and and be able to print to it via IP.
