Check Uploaded File Types
Students may drop files of nearly any type into your course webdrop folder. Most of the time, you will be able to determine the file type based on the file's extension, but some students will not include that in the file name. In that case, you can use this feature to check the file type. In most cases, we will be able to indentify the type based on the file's headers. This can help you select the correct program to open the file.
To check the file types of files uploaded to your course web drop folder:
- If you have not done so already, access the webdrop program at: https://webdrop.d.umn.edu. You will need to authenticate using your x.500 username and password
- Click the link "Manage Available course folders"
- Choose the appropriate course by clicking the radio button to the left of the course identifier
- Click the "Open Course Folder" button
- Select the "Display file types for all files (Word, Excel, etc.)" option by clickin the radio button to the left of the option.
- Click the "Submit" button
- You will see a list of documents, the user ID of the student who submitted it, the number of attempts, and a description of the file type, if we can determine what it is.
