Photoshop Instructions

Acquire the Image

Scanning:

  1. Go to the "File" menu
  2. Scroll down to "Import"
  3. Choose the input source (scanner) from the sub-menu

From file:

  1. Go to the "File" menu
  2. Choose "Open"
  3. Browse to the file on your hard drive you want to open
  4. Double-click on the file name

Save in the File Format of Your Graphic Image Editing Software

  1. Go to the "File" menu
  2. Choose "Save"
  3. The default file choice should be "Photoshop"
  4. If it isn't, choose "Photoshop" for format

Alter the Image

Orientation:

  1. Go to the "Image" menu
  2. Scroll down to "Rotate Canvas"
  3. Choose from the sub-menu

Cropping:

  1. Choose the cropping tool
    1. Go to the toolbar
    2. Put mouse pointer over the "Rectangular Marquee Tool"
    3. Hold down the mouse button (choices pop up)
    4. Choose the "Crop Tool" (far right)
  2. Do the crop
    1. Hold down the mouse button
    2. Drag over the area of the image you want to keep (TIP: Once you have selected the area of the image you want to keep, you can alter the area by dragging on the resize handles at the corners of the box)
    3. Release the mouse button
    4. Hit "enter" (Windows) or "return" (Mac OS)

Color/Brightness/Contrast

Resizing

  1. Go to the menu "Image"
  2. Scroll down to "Image Size"
  3. Type in a new pixel dimension
    (NOTE: The print size will change accordingly but will not be the same because printers are different beasts from monitors)
  4. Click "OK"

Reducing

  1. Go to the menu "Image"
  2. Scroll down to "Image Size"
  3. Under "Print Size" change the value in the "Resolution" box
    (NOTE: This will affect your screen size. You may need to go back to "Resizing" and adjust)
  4. Click "OK"

Save as in the File Format for Your Project

  1. Go to the menu "File"
  2. Scroll down to "Save As"
  3. Choose the format from the "Format" box
  4. Click "Save"
  5. Choose any options that may pop up during saving (this will vary by format chosen)

The one format that may not be available is "CompuServe GIF." This is because the "mode" of your image needs to be changed. To do this:

  1. Go to the "Image" menu
  2. Scroll down to "Mode"
  3. Choose "Indexed Color..." from the sub-menu
  4. Click "OK"

Now when you try "Save As" you will see "CompuServe GIF" as a format.
