The Physics Department at UMD offers degree programs leading to Bachelor's and Master's degrees in physics, as well as minors in physics and in astronomy for students majoring in other fields. We also provide foundation courses to students across the science and engineering disciplines. The size of the program assures our majors can get individual attention from faculty in their courses and in research work. Our students are encouraged to participate in research with our faculty at the forefront of science.

Our faculty are actively engaged in research in several areas, providing exciting opportunities for our students to do physics beyond a classroom setting. Faculty research interests include experimental studies of neutrinos and astro-particle physics, observational and modeling work in limnology and oceanography — including the neighboring Lake Superior, computational quantum chromodynamics (QCD), fundamental aspects of quantum mechanics, optics, and experimental work in condensed matter physics.
