My research interests are, most broadly, in the areas of language development, cognitive development, and learning. Currently, my research focus is upon how children use their understanding of intention to communicate with and apprehend the meaning of communicative acts. I am also embarking upon a new area of research in which I am examining teaching practices, cognitive development and classroom learning through the lens of complexity theory.
My personal interests reflect my curiosity about the natural world and people. My partner and I are naturalists and anthropologists by avocation. We enjoy hiking, backpacking, biking and bird watching. We have hiked the canyons of southeastern Utah every summer for the past 10 years, enjoying the beauty of the desert flora and fauna, discovering and learning about the Ancestral Puebloan culture, and rediscovering our essential selves in the solitude of the desert southwest.
