Now that the excitement of the start of the school year has quieted down, it’s a good time to start thinking about what comes next.

Career planning is a lifelong process that, although we think it should be nice and orderly, often is not! Here is a short list of some things your students can do now to help them along the way. To see a full list, broken down by stages, go to Planning Your Career.

In the meantime, encourage your students to:

  • Find Career & Internship Services! We’re located in 22 Solon Campus Center (aka: The Wedge). They can also find us online at any of these locations: websiteblog, FacebookTwitter, InstagramLinkedIn, and Pinterest.
  • Get involved on-campus - in something, a student organization, intramural sports, working on-campus, and more. Getting involved helps your students test out ideas, build their resumes, and feel connected. Leadership roles and added responsibility may come later.
  • Start a resume...even if it just has their high school involvement, UMD attendance, and any jobs up to now. Starting early helps them build it later.
  • Take a career assessments (Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, and CliftonStrengths), especially if they haven’t yet decided or declared a major.
  • Research careers related to their major(s). Check out the Follow-up of Majors, from our Graduate Follow-up Report, to see where recent UMD grads landed jobs right out of school.
  • Visit with a career counselor to help them clarify their plans and ease their, and maybe your, anxieties.
