Professional title

Study Abroad Peer Advisor

Marlys is a junior at UMD studying Industrial Engineering. For the spring semester of 2017, she studied abroad in Perth, Western Australia at Curtin University. Almost instantaneously she fell in love with the beautiful country, the culture and the people. Needless to say, she had an amazing experience and learned more about herself and the world than she expected! While abroad, she had the privilege to travel around Western Australia, frequent the beautiful beaches, and meet wonderful people from around the world. Because of her truly unique experience, her biggest goal being a peer advisor is to help other students have a great time as well. Now being back in Minnesota, she enjoys planning new excursions, doing outdoorsy-Duluth things, taking neat pictures, and sharing time and memories with friends.

Most memorable view during your study abroad experience
It’s a tie between two things; south of Perth about 8 hours is an adorable town called Esperance where the shore line is literally miles of rocky coves and white sand beaches where the water is a crystal clear, aqua blue. It was a dream. Also, while on “holiday” in Bali, I hiked a volcano called Mount Batur with a fellow UMD student. We started at 4AM and hiked two hours to the top to see the sunrise. The most breathtaking and satisfying work out ever!

What makes you happy
I’m happy when people I care about are happy.  Also, the obvious things like food and a good nap in addition to traveling and exploring new places and cultures.

What gets you out of bed in the morning
Coffee… specifically a cold press with caramel from Caribou Coffee. I guess the whole thing about living in a beautiful city like Duluth helps too.

Best advice to future study abroad students
I can’t explain how much I gained from going abroad. I learned more about myself and the world than I thought was possible AND made some amazing memories and friendships. YOU CAN TOO! I can’t say that enough. You just have to work as hard as possible to make it happen, then stay open minded and try everything!

What's the next item on your bucket list
A Euro-trip with all the amazing friends I made while abroad. Our “squad” consisted of people from Sweden, Ireland, Scotland, Germany, and England, so we plan to hit all of those countries plus more.
