2005-2006 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS
GROUP PROJECT: Erik Larson and Candice Richards
Erik Larson is a Senior Engineer while Candice Richards is the Associate Director for the Department of Facilities Management. Erik and Candice have taken the lead in coordinating the initial development, implementation and enforcement of the UMD Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program. Because of their attention to detail and willingness to go beyond requirements, UMD has emerged as a leader in regional efforts to protect area streams and Lake Superior.
This is an on-going program that has included the development of a detailed five-year plan and creation of a campus steering committee to oversee the plan. The mission of UMD Storm Water Pollution Prevention Program is to reduce the possible negative impacts of the campus on the surrounding watersheds and ultimately the Lake Superior ecosystem.
The program’s focus is on the community of students, employees, and contractors at the University of Minnesota Duluth. Erik and Candice’s foresight has created a program to demonstrate UMD’s commitment to the six storm water control measures: public education and outreach; public participation and involvement; illicit discharge detection; construction site sediment and erosion control; post construction storm water management; and pollution prevention and good housekeeping.
Working with Facilities Management and other UMD staff, faculty, regional governments and other agencies, Erik and Candice has identified the best management practices needed for UMD to reduce the impact of storm water pollution that may originate or flow through UMD properties, and have ensured that all regulatory requirements are being met.
It is a pleasure to present Erik and Candice with this award for their hard work and dedication.
