2007-2008 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS
Continuous Service Award
It goes without saying that we have many standout staff members in a
variety of departments on campus. In rare cases, however, there are staff
members that you almost cannot imagine their departments being without.
For time in service, dedication and her vast knowledge of everything having
to do with the Graduate School, M.J. Leone is just such a one.
M.J. came to UMD in 1975 and has been in the Graduate School since 1977.
The stellar service she provides to the students and her initiative in
fulfilling the duties of the Graduate School office were mentioned over
and over in the many letters of support that accompanied her nomination.
Notable were the repeated references to her "dedication" to
the students, her "commitment to the Graduate School" and her
office which, "hums like a machine." As a member of the Graduate
Council wrote, "She is always courteous, always tolerant, and always
knows the answers! How remarkable!" Needless to say, M.J. has seen
some major changes during these 30 years, not the least of which is the
requirements associated with serving international students which, like
so many other issues, she became a campus resource for.
For her dedication and commitment to the campus, department and graduate
students, I am very pleased to present this award to M.J.
