2008-2009 OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARDS
Continuous Service Award
It’s fair to say that most staff members who are tasked with arranging for a major event for 100+ attendees might get stressed by the details. When the attendance could run over 5000, it’s a national tournament, it falls between several other major events and it needs to be a spectacular success, well... that’s pressure! But Sharyl Beaudin can tell you how to pull it off because she’s done it.
In 2003, it took twenty people to organize the NCAA Div. I Women’s Ice Hockey Frozen Four. In 2008, two people handled all these duties and Sharyl’s role was pivotal. She served as Tournament Director and was involved in every phase, from planning to trophy presentation. Sharyl took special care in each aspect, from selecting the athlete’s mementos to obtaining the best of the various teams’ photos. Her work and attention to detail was noted by all who participated. But this wasn’t her only event; it came only weeks after she had worked on the WCHA Women’s Final Five, and she was also working on fundraising events and another sports tournament. If that weren’t enough, while carrying all of these, very public, responsibilities to a successful completion, Sharyl was learning the business operations – and EFS! – in preparation for becoming the departmental accountant.
For all her work – but especially for helping UMD to host a spectacular event on a national stage – I am proud to present Sharyl with this award.
