Outstanding Service Award Recipient (2010-2011)
What does it look like when an Assistant Scientist goes above and beyond? How about when the scientist in question has co-authored 11 full-length, peer reviewed manuscripts for two of which he is the primary first author? His department notes that James Bjork’s rate of publication compares with the expectation for entry-level faculty, and is a “true testament to the vital role he plays in the overall success” of the research program. But Jim is much more to Biochemistry & Molecular Biology than just his authorship.
His assistance in the success of research projects extends beyond helping with the experiments themselves, although, his department mentions that he often is the one to suggest a new understanding that actually changes the direction of a project. He also has helped train numerous students, assisted with other research labs, and shown a dedication which results in many extra hours of study and experimentation – often outside of the normal workday, and is active in introducing local students to the lab, sharing his excitement for both his job and the University with the next generation.
For his dedication to his department, the research projects, and especially for being an exceptional ambassador for UMD and the sciences, we are proud to present this award to Jim.
