Outstanding Service Award Recipient (2010-2011)
Project Award - Great Lakes Restoration Initiative Proposal Submission Marathon
Margy Bell, Kathryn Feldt, William Flaherty, Elizabeth Rumsey
In January 2010, Margaret Bell, Kathryn Feldt, William Flaherty and Elizabeth Ramsey collaborated with NRRI scientists to submit 19 grant proposals to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, meeting an extremely tight deadline. This work resulted in over $4M being awarded to UMD and its collaborators.
This project required tremendous planning, document preparation and activity. Aside from the initial background work, budgets had to be compiled and then massive amounts of paperwork completed, requiring formatting of figures and tables, proofreading, editing, etc. The package for just one grant submission came to 49 pages of complex material. That was just for one and they submitted 19! The efforts expended upon this project went way beyond normal workload and required unprecedented cooperation between the Sponsored Projects Administration and NRRI’s Center for Water and the Environment. And, it should be noted, all this activity was on top of these recipients’ normal workloads.
That no project of this scale had been attempted before, and that the four largest of the proposals were funded, speaks volumes about both the work accomplished and the skills of those involved. We are very pleased to present this project award to Margy, Katy, Bill & Elizabeth.
