Project Award: Technology Overhaul
Kirk Kersten
KUMD says they now work smarter, faster and more efficiently, thanks to Kirk Kersten.
Using grant funding, KUMD established a project aimed to upgrade their production capabilities and improve their broadcast distribution. The grant came with specific timelines for completion and required additional work that was not part of Kirk’s general job responsibilities. Rather than spend additional money for outsiders to perform the work, Kirk and the station manager decided that he should take responsibility for the upgrades.
The project was significant, with installations of a new 660’ transmission line at the tower, an automation system, a system that provides remote monitoring, and two streaming systems – one for adding apps for smartphones, and the other used to air the Women’s hockey games. Beyond all those installations, it was necessary to research, purchase and train on state-of-the-art remote broadcast equipment, and also to network three computers to the on-air computer.
Kirk’s work brought KUMD’s station technology into the 21st century and we are pleased to present him with this project award. |
