Course Objectives

1. To see plays.

2. To effectively evaluate theatre productions.

3. To analyze structure, plot, characterization and design of theatre productions.

4. To identify and describe major theatre genres from different historical periods.

Class Expectations

Class Attendance: Role will be taken each day the class meets. Each absence beyond three will result in the loss of five points per absence. Students are expected to arrive for class on time. Being late to class will count as an absence.
 
The use of laptop computers and hand held electronic devices is prohibited during class time. Students found texting during class will be asked to leave the classroom.
 
On Line Discussions: Students are required to read the text and contribute to on-line discussions. For Moodle log on directions, go to <http://www.d.umn.edu/~mharvey/th1001moodleinstruct.html>

Play Attendance: Each student will see five plays during the semester. Attendance at both of the following theatre productions is required:

Critical Review Blogs

Promote a show worth seeing, or pan a production others should avoid. Go to UMD Theatre Review Blog and post your comments concerning the plays you've seen or reply to posts by others. Each 500 word blog entry is worth up to a maximum of ten points. A minimum of five blog entries is required for the course. For those who choose to blog more than five times, the scores for the top five blogs will be calculated into the final grade.


Extra Credit

Students may choose to see more than five plays during the semester. Blogs for up to two additional productions will receive up to 10 points each.


Evaluation

Grade will be determined as follows:

Midterm Objective Exam 75 pts.
Final Objective Exam

75 pts.

On-line Discussion (13) 65 pts.
Blog Entries (5) 50 pts.
Total 265 pts.
   
Extra Credit - Plays reviewed beyond the five required for the course. +10 pts. each (20 pts. max)
