Today Julie, Alissa and I had this conversation about beauty and how our ideas have changed. I hope you all enjoy a glimpse into our minds (scary, so proceed with caution!!)

Hillary- Is Kate Winslet a reincarnation of the angle in Snadro Botticelli's Birth of Venice painting? Is she in the spotlight to remind us that beauty is not just thin?

Julie- She is thin.

Hillary- No, she's not up to "actress" standards. She's size 12 (sometimes 14). I think she is thin, but check out some Titanic review sites, some are really nasty towards her.

Alissa- Kate Winslet is thin, or not, depending on who you compare her to. To other actresses, she's far from bony thin, which is why James Cameron often called her Kate "Weighsalot". Compared to actual size of the rest of the world, she's the average size (a bit smaller than average, actually).

Julie- That is terrible. Marilyn Monroe was a 12 - don't people know it is not normal to be that tiny? Those models are computer altered, and starving!

Alissa- I was just talking about that last night. If any beautiful women were the size of Marilyn Monroe today, she would be told to lost 6 or 7 dress sizes before anyone would look at her. grrrr. Our society makes me dislike myself. Why should I feel fat when it's the actresses/models who are unhealthy? No fair.

Hillary- I would love to see a guy get down to his idea of our ideal size!
Were people in the Renaissance time period thin? or were they "normal size"?

Julie- Well, the way I understand it is kind of confusing. To be pale and a bit heave was fashionable and beautiful because it meant you were rich and could afford to eat and not work outside. Women were supposed to be a bit plump but they also wore corsettes didn't they? Peasants were thin and brown, our standard of beauty.

Alissa- Renaissance women were larger. The "female form" was considered beautiful, and to be larger was just more beautiful. Look at art from that time. There are no stick-starving women painted. The women painted had some extra curves, but that was normal, sensuous, beautiful.

Hillary- It looks as thought nowadays peasant is in, that is a shame.

These are just some of our thoughts (now reading it wasn't so bad, was it?). If anybody has comments or disagree, please feel free to respond. We are really interested in what other people think. How has beauty changed, and do you think it is for the better? There is an email forward that has some "women facts" and "ideal's" truths. If interested please let me know.
