Making Another WebPage
(called writings.html in this example)

The task for today is to (A) make a new WebPage, (B) change it's "permissions" (chmod a+r *.*), (C) cut and paste your sample writings to the new page, (D) "hot button" the new page on your main WebPage (index.html), (E) make a backup copy of all of your web files to a floppy disk, and, (F) close your accounts.

(A) To make a new page for Sample Writings:

  1. open your WWW acount
  2. cd www
  3. pico writings.html
  4. then cut and paste the following from this screen to your empty writings.html file
    (Ctrl-c copies highlighted materials from the screen):

  5. Ctrl-X
  6. Answer "Yes" at the prompt

(B) Change "Permissions" for the new page:

  1. chmod a+r *.*
  2. Then check out your new writings.html file on Netscape or Internet Explorer

(C) Put your sample writings on your new page:

  1. Open your writings.html file with pico.
  2. Then copy ("cut and paste") your sample writing materials from your word processor to your new and opened www writings.html file.
  3. Delete the "Insert your sample writings here" and paste your copied sample writing materials in that section. Make sure you paste them between the <PRE> tag and the </pre> tag. (<PRE> means that it is "PREformatted text.")
  4. Ctrl-X
  5. Answer "Yes" at the prompt

    (D) "Hot Button" your new page on your HomePage (index.html):

    1. Copy the following to your index.html page (your HomePage), substituting your E-mail name in place of "troufs":

    <P>

    (E) Saving your WebStuff to your disk:

    1. Go to the FTP (File Transfer Program) and log on
    2. Highlight the www (don't click on it, just highlight it)
    3. Check to see that the left column is set to Drive A:
    4. Click on the left-facing arrow
    5. Answer "Yes" when it asks, "Do you want to transfer the selected directory structures?"

    (F) Don't forget to close your accounts when you're finished.
