CLA Scholarships

Scholarships and awards available to students in the College of Liberal Arts at UMD for the 2013-2014 academic year.

Below you will find a list of scholarships with their specific selection criteria organized by department. You will need to contact each specific department to apply for their scholarships and awards, where available, a web link is provided. The scholarships listed under “CLA-wide” are available for any student in CLA regardless of your major.

$1,000 8656 – Tobin Peace & Non-Violence Scholarship - Student with a demonstrated interest in non-violence studies. This student is to show potential for contributing to the field of non-violence at the local, national, and/or international level. Student expected to engage/or will have already completed a minimum of 10 hours of service at Safe Haven Shelter for Battered Women in Duluth, MN or another local institution dealing with domestic abuse.  60 credits completed 2.85 min/3.3 major All CLA
$3,000 4521 – Herbert Sorenson Family Scholarship Full-time undergraduate student entering his/her junior year. Must be a resident of the State of Minnesota. Scholarship is renewable if student maintains 3.0 GPA. Essay requirement; unofficial transcript; 2 recommendations from UMD faculty or staff. Junior 3.0 min All CLA
American Indian Studies        
$250 min. 8906 - UMD Mike Munnell Scholarship Award -  Awarded to the student with the highest GPA within the Department of American Indian Studies. The award recipient will be selected after the grades from fall semester post. No application. Junior; Senior   Major/Minor American Indian Studies
Communication  Communication Awards and Scholarships      
$250 2418 – UMD John Ness Memorial Award - The Ness Award honors the graduating senior who best combines a solid academic performance with both a broad commitment to service and quality research/scholarship. 90 credits completed 3.5 min COMM
$1,000 The Virginia T. Katz Scholarship - The Katz Award honors the returning junior who best combines a solid academic performance with both a broad commitment to service and quality research/scholarship. 60 credits completed; senior 2.5 min COMM
  UMD Communication Service Award - honors the graduating senior who best meets the Department's mission of improving the Department, the University, and the surrounding Duluth community through paid and unpaid service opportunities.  Graduating Senior   COMM

$500 5740 – UMD Michael Robert Lenz Creative Writing Scholarship - Awarded to the student who submits the best original work of imaginative literature—narrative, dramatic, or lyric—in prose or in verse. Geography Geography Awards and Scholarships      
$500 min 1122 – UMD Emma Goldman Scholarship in Geography - Full-time, undergraduate student in good academic standing; A plus factor is to be given to female students or others majoring in Geography who have demonstrated support for women, women’s issues, and feministic academic and intellectual principles; demonstrated commitment to values, ethics, politics and scholarship that matches those of Emma Goldman; unofficial transcript; 3 letters of support; samples of coursework; personal statement.
