Summary of the 1998 Baeumler-Kaplan Memorial Event

The annual Baeumler-Kaplan Holocaust Commemoration Lecture was given on Thursday, April 30, 1998, at 3:00 p.m. in the Marshall Performing Art Center at UMD. The lecture was given by author Kenneth Stern and the topic was " 'Intellectuals' and the Politics of Hate." There was also a book signing and reception after Mr. Stern's lecture in the Tweed Museum.

Kenneth Stern is an attorney and a program specialist on anti-semitism and extremism for the American Jewish Committee. His book, "Holocaust Denial" is one of the first comprehensive books treating denial of the Holocaust. His newest book, "A Force Upon the Plain: The American Militia Movement and the Politics of Hate" was nominated for a National Book Award. This year's Holocaust Commemoration Lecture is sponsored by numerous departments and organizations on campus and in the Duluth-Superior Area Foundation (the Wirtanen Family Fund) and the Minnesota Humanities Commission.
