The Merry Widow is a romantic operetta by Franz Lehár. The librettists, Viktor Léon and Leo Stein, based the story — concerning a rich widow, Hanna Glawari, and her attempt to find a husband — on an 1861 comedy play, L'Attaché d'ambassade (The Ambassador's Attache) by Henri Meilhac. In the Pontevedrian embassy, Paris, 1905, the recently-widowed Hanna Glawari appears to be in danger of marrying a foreigner. How would the economy manage without her millions? Danilo - a former lover of Hanna's, we discover – is joined by a cast of diplomats and a chorus of admirers to persuade her to keep her affections (and her finances) domestic. All the while, Lehár's lilting music, including the immortal ballad 'Vilja', will hold audiences under its enchanting spell.
