Musical theatre is the harmonious marriage of well-honed song, dance and acting skills. Musical theatre training at UMD focuses on these skills both in isolation and in integrative classroom, studio and performance venues. Music theory, music theatre history, private piano and singing lessons, choir and opera workshop provide the knowledge and skill background for song and the musician. Ongoing classes in ballet, jazz, tap and modern dance fuel and train the body to be strong, graceful, and stylish in both movement and dance. Acting classes range from improvisation to Shakespeare, American realism to Comedia delarte and skill classes focus on audition techniques, voice and speech, dialects and stage combat. The program is challenging and demands the utmost of physical, mental and emotional strength and discipline from its students, resulting in strong and knowledgeable performers who are "triple threats" and eager to join the work force.
