ETYMOLOGY:   From Middle English nute, note, from Old English hnutu, from Proto-Germanic *hnutuz (“nut”) (cf. West Frisian nút, Dutch noot, German Nuss, Danish nød, Swedish nöt), from Proto-Indo-European *knu-, *kneu- (cf. Irish cnó, Latin nux (“walnut”), Albanian nyç (“a gnarl”)).
