Agricultural Occupational Health

Goal: For students and faculty of the Minnesota Rural Health School to have a basic understanding of the physical and mental health and safety issues in agricultural work in order to better prevent and treat illness and injuries of farmers and farm families.

Objectives: After completion of the module the participant will:

  • Understand the role agriculture plays in Minnesota rural communities and the family dynamics associated with an agricultural life style.
  • Have an understanding of the injuries associated with farming, the hazardous equipment commonly used, and methods for prevention of these injuries.
  • Know methods of prevention and how to assess and provide initial first aid treatment for acute agricultural chemical exposures, respiratory hazards, and other important agriculturally related health conditions including pesticides, hearing loss, infectious zoonotic diseases, and dermatitis.
