Spaniards and Maya Along the Coast of Yucatán

"When the Spaniards discovered this land, they asked the Indian chief . . . 'what do you call it?' The Indians, who did not understand, said uic athan, which means: 'what are you saying? . . . we do not understand you.' And then the Spaniard said, 'they call it Yucatan. . . . '"
