NOUN:   A genus of plants (scientific name: Agave) of which the chief species is the maguey or century plant. Attaining maturity, it produces a gigantic flower stem.
ETYMOLOGY:   From Ancient Greek Ἀγαυή (Agauē, “Agave”) from ἀγαυός (“noble, illustrious”).
