eBooks on EBSCOhost
Access thousands of recently published books in electronic format, many business related. Each book is listed in the Library Catalog with a link to its location in eBooks on EBSCOhost. Only one person at our institution can view a particular book at a time—another user trying to view the same book will get a "busy" message—and readers can check out an electronic book for 48 hours. The first time you try to check out eBooks on EBSCOhost you must create a free account. On the main eBooks on EBSCOhost screen proceed to "Create Account" and follow the on-screen instructions.

Company & industry news linked to electronic reference books. Contains histories, market shares, rankings, industry surveys, and investment reports.

Business Source Premier
Full text of over 3,400 business periodicals. This is our largest business database. It provides our best access to scholarly journals. It also has special industry reports, including "SWOT" analysis. Note the "company profiles" tab, which will allow you to access over 5,000 MarketLine Company Profiles.

Emerald Insight
A smaller business database with full text of scholarly journals in English, many of which are based in Europe.

Google Scholar
Indexes scholarly literature. Strong in the areas of medicine, engineering, the sciences, and business. Provides relevancy rankings based on the citation patterns of the articles. Sources are linked to Library electronic holdings via "Find It." This is your best first place to search for scholarly "peer reviewed" information.


ProQuest News
Contains the full text of newspaper articles from over 350 titles. Provides our only source of electronic access to the Wall Street Journal.

Often news about regional business events, companies, products, and services are found here. Included in this database are A&G Information, Africa News Service, Inter Press Service, Resource News International, South American Business, M2 Communications, PR Newswire, Business Newswire, Canadian Corporate News, News Bytes News Network and Phillips Business Information Highlights. Information provided by these sources covers business, political, economic and other diverse, international news events. In order to maintain the most current collection of news, this database contains the most recent 30 days of information from each of these wire sources. Several hundred articles are added to Business Wire News database each day.

A searchable archive of the Duluth News-Tribune, with complete full-text content of local and regional news, including community events, schools, politics, government policies, cultural activities, local businesses, business people, state industries, and economic issues. Covers 11/1995 - present.


Contains the complete backfiles of almost 600 scholarly journals, starting with v. 1, issue, 1. Some of the journals date from the 1600s. There are well over 3 million articles available. JSTOR is interdisciplinary, with almost 100 business related periodical titles. All full text.

MasterFile Premier
Contains popular and general interest magazines covering a broad range of disciplines. Many business topics can be researched here as well. Over 2600 titles are indexed, with over 1950 titles available in full text.


ScienceDirect (Elsevier)
Contains the abstracts or titles of 1800 scientific and social science journals from Elsevier Science. Access to the full text of articles is available for those journals subscribed to by the University of Minnesota. 282 titles are business related.

Use the Web Version

  • Request an account using your UMD email address.
  • Within 48 hours, you will receive a factset.net ID in your email.
  • Go to https://my.factset.com, enter the factset.net ID, then click on the Register button. You will receive a one-time passcode for your first log in. Be sure to set your own permanent password.
  • Once logged in, you will be walked through account customization and setup.

Install on a Workstation (optional)

  • Follow all the instructions above. When done, you can install the FactSet Workstation by downloading from https://support.factset.com/workstation/.
    • Once the .MSI file has downloaded, double-click the file and click through the Next, Install and Finish buttons.

IBIS World Logo

IBIS World Industry Reports provide industry market research reports on over 1,300 U.S. industries, plus Canada, China, and Global Industries. Each IBISWorld report includes:

Database containing over 600 consumer product and service marketing reports. Most are US and UK based. They are full of amazing detail and analysis. This is one of our better sources of consumer psychographic information. Note that first time users will have to create a free account.

Reference USA

Reference USA
Directory of U.S. business. Lists size of company, year established, type of business, credit rating, top personnel, yearly sales and more. Data can be searched by name of company, name of officers, geographic area, SIC, size, revenue or any combination.



SBRnet (Sports Business Research Network) provides resources related to the business of sports including industry-developed market research, government statistics, facility reports and news, international market publications, customized research, and directories.

Ulrich's Periodical Directory

Ulrichs Periodical Directory contains nearly a quarter-million serial records, including: academic and scholarly publications, consumer magazines, electronic publications, monographic series, newsletters, newspapers, trade publications, 'zines, and many other types of serial publications. This data is pulled from market research reports, trade publications, scientific journals, and government databases. Note that search results can be individual statistics or larger "dossier" reports. For each statistic, Statista provides available meta data including source, release date, number of respondents, and any other relevant details. Content is geared towards business and marketing statistical needs, with a focus on current (not historical) statistics. NBER: National Bureau of Economic Research
Contains the full-text of working papers from the National Bureau of Economics Research. The NBER covers four areas of empirical research: developing new statistical measurements, estimating quantitative models of economic behavior, assessing the effects of public policies on the U.S. economy, and projecting the effects of alternative policy proposals. Many of its publications, including its working papers, NBER reporter, and NBER digest, are available for download. NBER is updated frequently.

RKMA Marketing Research Handbooks
Richard K. Miller & Associates (RKMA) publishes 12 biennial business reference handbooks focused on marketing and the consumer marketplace. Each handbook includes market assessments and forecasts, sector trends, profiles of market leaders, and statistics. In addition to in-depth analyses, the handbooks include links to hundreds of websites for additional information. Online versions of these reports accessible to UMD faculty, students and staff via the links found in each description.


A multilingual encyclopedia that is collaboratively edited and maintained by thousands of users via wiki software, and is hosted and supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. In addition to typical encyclopedia entries, Wikipedia includes information more often associated with almanacs, gazetteers, and specialist magazines, as well as coverage of current events. It has over 5.9 million entries, and is constantly growing. Many articles are long, detailed, with sources and related links. Wikipedia has been controversial because of its open collaborative nature, however it has received good marks in recent scholarly journals. This may be a good place to get an overview of business related definitions, topics or issues.
