Textbook: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, Third Updated Edition, by David Lay. ISBN: 978-0321287137.
Topics: The course catalog description is: "Systems of linear equations, matrix algebra, determinants, vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence, span, basis, coordinates, linear transformations, matrix representations of linear transformations, eigenvalues and eigenvectors, diagonalization, Gram-Schmidt orthogonalization, orthogonal projection and least squares". This corresponds to chapters 1-6 in our text. If time permits we will also cover the SVD (singular value decomposition) and other topics in chapter 7.
Exams: There will be two midterm exams (Oct 17th and Nov 14th) and a final (Dec 17th, 10am-12). A sheet of notes is allowed on each exam. .
Practice midterm 1 exam Practice midterm 1 solutions .
Practice midterm 2 exam; practice midterm 2 solutions .
Practice final exam, Practice final solutions .
Grading: The homework assignments will be weighted equally, with the lowest score dropped. Grades will be assigned on a curve. The approximate weighting is homework: 20%, worksheets/in-class: 5%, midterms: 20%, final: 35%. If you do exceptionally well in some areas, these may be weighted more.
